Description

Subject Matter:

In Buddhism the lotus is an emblem of purity and enlightenment, growing from murky depths to blossom majestically above the surface of the water.

Physical Description:

The red mottled sandstone of this lotus relief is unique to the Sikri quarry, just outside of Mathura.
