Description

Subject Matter:

In this photograph, United States Army General Lysander Cutler sits at a slight turn as he gazes sullenly toward the viewer. His coat, modestly ornamented with two rows of gold buttons, has a slight sheen to it. The backdrop behind him is mainly an ombré of light to medium gray tones. Cutler was a general who served in the Eastern Theater during the American Civil War (1861-65). Here he poses for Mathew Brady, who produced a large number of cartes-de-visite of various Union Army and Navy officers during the war.
