M. Haxtun, Lieut. Comdo., U.S.N.
E. & H. T. Anthony; Mathew B. Brady
Description
Subject Matter:
In this photograph, Lieutenant Commander M. Haxtun stands at a slight turn as he looks with a kindly expression indirectly out of the picture plane. His form-fitting officer’s coat, crisp black bowtie, and large, tassled epaulets give him a dapper appearance. He occupies a rather minimally described interior space. Haxtun served in the United States Navy during the American Civil War (1861-65). Here he poses for Mathew Brady, who produced a large number of cartes-de-visite of various Union Army and Navy officers during the war.
Physical Description:
Three-quarter length portrait of a mustachioed man in a military uniform with one hand tucked into his coat breast.
