Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph depicts a muscular man mid-backflip on a vast ocean shore. Occupying the center of the frame, the man wears a bathing suit and is curled inward, his arms grasping at his knees. The ocean shore and the sky above are printed in a subtle wash of light gray tones. Created at the apex of his back flip, the photograph causes the man to appear as if he’s floating in space. In the lower right one can see the marks in the sand from where he sprung. His shadow is cast directly below him on the shore. The title explains that the man is practicing capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that blends elements of dance, acrobatics and street fighting. In the distance, a dispersed group of people wade through the surf.
