Subject Matter:
In this photograph, United States Army General Abner Doubleday and his wife, Mary, pose as a bourgeois couple in a richly appointed interior. The general sits with his hands folded in his lap and one foot outstretched, while his wife stands behind him and rests her arm on his shoulder. Their solemn gazes crisscross one another; neither looks directly at the viewer. General Doubleday served at Fort Sumter and at Gettysburg, among other battles, during the American Civil War (1861-65). Here he and his wife pose for Mathew Brady, who produced a large number of cartes-de-visite of various Union Army and Navy officers during the war.
