Description

As an American who did not travel to Europe, Arshile Gorky taught drawing at the Grand Central School of Art in New York, and, before the arrival of exiles from Europe during World War II, learned of Surrealism through his contacts at the Art Students League, the latest art books, and French periodicals. He developed a great interest in de Chirico, whose mannequins probably inspired this rendition of a faceless humanoid, which uncannily blends living and non-living elements.
