Man’s Hat

Physical Description:

This skullcap (tanggeon) was worn by men over a horsehair-woven head-band (manggeon) every day at home. A hat (gat) is worn on top of it. The skullcap is woven with horsehair using a wooden mold. Most of these skullcaps are made of the hair of ponies in Jejudo. Pony hair was so fine that it hardly showed any knots, leaving the surface smooth. After being woven, the skullcap is boiled while still fixed to the mold, then dried under the shade to fix the shape. It is then dyed with high quality ink since the natural color of pony hair is red or yellow. This skullcap is almost perfectly preserved.
