Description

Subject Matter:

In this photograph, United States Navy Captain Matthew C. Perry stands stoically in dress uniform as he looks out indirectly from the picture plane. The outlined forms of a table and curtain are only barely suggested in the mostly blank background behind him. This is a posthumous printing of the image of the naval captain and war veteran renowned for the forcible opening of Japanese ports to American trade. The carte-de-visite by E. & H.T. Anthony was likely printed during the American Civil War (1861-65), which commenced three years after the captain's death in 1858.

Physical Description:

Three-quarter length portrait of a man in a military uniform, a sword at his left side.
