Description

Subject Matter:

Giacometti most famously created series of elongated, textured figural sculptures. Always quietly anonymous, the figures are striking in their unusual stance. Giacometti was also a portraitist, and frequently depicted his inner circle. Even in the context of personal portraits, Giacometti favored a highly stylized technique. The woman in this print is the artist's mother. Giacometti situates her in a scene, but also depicts her in a hieratic pose. Giacometti essentializes her pose in order to allow his mother become an icon.
