Description

Subject Matter:

Gordon Newton is a Detroit based mixed media artist. The inspiration or source of the title for this piece is unknown, but the DIA has a larger sculpture by the artist that uses similar materials and colors and is titled, SDX Satellite Delay. Newton has been a well known artist among the Cass Corridor group since the 1970s, and he had a close relationship with the prominent collector Jim Duffy.

Physical Description:

This small sculpture consists of a black rectangular base with spools on it, all spray painted black. A red wooden pole is sticking out of the center of the base and is holding up a thin red platform, with additional spools and a bright red ball on top. Multiple rubber belts are threaded among the spools on both the red and black elements.
