Subject Matter:
Lombard summered in Monhegan, Maine and developed much of his aesthetic and subject matter there. Monhegan was a well known artist colony that had existed since the mid-nineteenth century. Lombard depicts a flatter plateau that seems to be almost at level with water. These even planes of space (including the sheet of clouds above) contribute to a feeling of serenity.
