Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph consists of a composite of nine individual photographs which were grouped together as a grid. Each frame depicts a closeup view of an ornately-carved column capital. Sculpted into organic, intertwining patterns with deep undercuts, each capital is different while bearing similar symmetrical, blossom-like compositions. Emerging from these relief carvings, allegorical figures and characters from the Catholic faith enact various scenes from the Bible. Extending downwards from each capital are two columns. Past these forms are glimpses of the structure that the columns support—the cloister of the the cathedral of Monreale on the Italian island of Sicily.
