Description

Subject Matter:

The eye travels back to front in this photograph. In the distance, the ghostly figure of Mount Hermon emerges out of a murky background to preside over the lesser hills at its feet. Streaks of snow appear like pale fingers stretching down out of the sky and grasping the mountain’s peak. Boulders and short stone walls with the occasional shrub populate the terrain in the foreground. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.

Physical Description:

In this photograph, rocky hills wind up toward a mountain peak in the distance.
