Description

Subject Matter:

At almost the exact center of the photograph, two men stand facing each other, both shown in profile. The scene has the air of a chance encounter, which is somewhat at odds with the stiff poses of these two men and the wilderness setting. They stand in a field of tall grass with a short stone wall and a cluster of trees behind them. The peaks of three prominent hills form a jagged horizon line in the background. The label suggests that this meeting takes place on or near Christ’s famed “Sermon on the Mount,” though the photograph lacks any visual information to make explicit this connection. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.
