Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph depicts a view of Palermo’s pier and harbor in the late 1800’s. Created while standing at the top of a lighthouse looking back towards the mainland, the photograph frames a wide view of surrounding maritime infrastructure. The lighthouse was situated on a long stone pier which runs in a straight line away from the camera towards the land. The pier’s right side is abutted by a thick jetty of stones to protect it from waves. On the left of the pier a fleet of wooden sail ships are docked at their moorings. The harbor beyond is lined with large cement buildings and warehouses. Rising in the distance is the uniquely shaped Monte Pellegrino, a mountainous land formation that overlooks the city of Palermo and its bay. From this vantage point, the center of Monte Pellegrino appears to gently slope upwards, while its left and right sides fall away in sheer rocky cliffs.
