Description

Subject Matter:

Mount Zion dominates the left-hand side of the image, whereas the Mount of Olives can be seen in the distance on the right. Herders and livestock in the foreground appear minuscule as they traverse a dirt path along the side of Mount Zion. Low walls surround a spattering of stone and brick at the hill’s summit, signaling a section of the Old City of Jerusalem. The Tower of the Ascension atop the Mount of Olives is barely visible in the far background. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.

Physical Description:

Human figures and cattle line a dirt-and-stone path in the foreground. A large hill crested with buildings and low walls dominates the left-hand side of photograph.
