Description

Subject Matter:

Nakamura Matsue III, also known as Nakamura Tomijūrō II, was born in 1786.  Though he was originally a merchant in Osaka, he entered the theater and became a pupil of Nakamura Uzaemon III.  He died in 1853.

This is part of a series, of which UMMA has two prints. Pair with 2003/1.605.

Physical Description:

The woman standing in this print wears a purple and green robe decorated with bamboo shoots and a blue and gold border.  Her sash is red and white, and she has a white and blue towel around her shoulders.  A sheathed sword is visible behind her.  Above her are lines of calligraphy against a plain background of white and blue bands.
