Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph is from Paul Strand's The Mexican Portfolio published in 1967 by Paul Strand. The portfolio consists of a series of 20 images depicting Mexico's people, architecture, landscape, and churches. It was first published in 1940 under the name Photographs of Mexico, and reprinted under Strand's supervision in 1967 as The Mexican Portfolio. This is the only image included from the year 1932, and was taken at the onset of his travels through Mexico. One of the only landscape images, this photograph provides a setting for the rest of the portfolio, which primarily focuses on the people of Mexico. This landscape image shows various cacti and trees from an arid climate in the foreground. In the background, white buildings sit on the horizon. A large, cloudy sky looms above.
