Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph depicts a view of a New York City sidewalk, with pedestrians strolling in front of a bar. The image was created at a tilted angle, causing the people to appear to be walking at an incline. Centered in the middle of the frame is a woman in a phone booth. Contained inside the glass and metal booth, the woman wears a white dress and shoes, and is talking on the phone. Leaning back, her left leg raised up on the side of the booth, which slightly raises the hem of her dress. She holds the receiver with two hands, her face obscured by a plate of metal on the side of the booth. Looking closely however, one can see her smiling mouth near the receiver. Behind her, pedestrians walk by engrossed in conversation or immersed in their own thoughts. The tilted angle at which the image was created adds a dynamism to the composition, accentuating the isolated intimacy of the woman’s unheard conversation.
