The two men appear to be miners, as they are wearing helmets with small candles attached to them and they are in a space with a low ceiling. John Sloan was an artist with the Ashcan School. He most often portrayed the lives of working classes.

Physical Description:

Two men sitting in a space with a low ceiling, wearing miner's hats with candles inserted in them, read a newspaper with headlines describing the Titanic catastrophe. A pick axe is leaning against the wall beside the man on the right.
