Subject Matter:
This work comes from the Aluminum Series of prints (1970) which Stella based on his shaped canvas painting series of the same title from 1961. He combined techniques of silkscreen and lithography in order to emulate the aesthetic of the metallic paintings. The titles of the works in this series refer a range of things, people, historical events and places, which Stella refered to as "literary or glamorous." Newstead Abbey refers to property owned by the family of the British romantic poet, Lord Byron.
Physical Description:
This blue-grey print is in the shape of a fat H. Within it, areas of white show through as vertical lines The lines bend slightly at the middle creating a diamond shape in the center of the H.
