Description

Subject Matter:

Photographed from a distance, this image depicts a scenic view of Niagara Falls. The photograph was taken from behind the American Falls on the American side of the river, and faces towards the u-shaped cascades of Horseshoe Falls beyond. To the left of the image, huddled on a walled-overlook, a group of visitors are silhouetted against the rushing water. Underexposed against the sunlit brightness of the water and mist, the trees and banks of the river are shrouded in dark shadows. The photograph’s slightly long exposure turns the torrent of falling water in a streaking blur. Gushing from the river below, vaporous clouds of atomized water float upwards from the falls’ deafening cascades, obscuring the falls’ far banks.
