Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph depicts a view of a Dublin city street at night, the pavement coated in a light snowfall. Two figures—a man and woman—occupy either side of the frame, each walking their pet dogs on leashes. The figures are silhouetted by the glow of streetlights, their forms bundled up in long winter coats. The two figures presumably just passed one another, and are walking in the opposite directions. Their dogs however stare back at one another, straining at their leashes with rapt attention. The moody, isolated atmosphere is emphasized by the stark grain of the photograph, which is caused by developing photographs taken at night. This ambience is reflected by the walkers themselves, who, lost in their thoughts, continue on their way, unyielding to their dogs’ interests.
