Description

Subject Matter:

This is the cover of a portfolio titled "El Terror", or "The Terror." In 1947, Ortega was sentenced to ten years in prison for his anti-Franco activism, though he only served five years. This portfolio was created just after he was released from prison and before he left for Paris, where he received a scholarship to take classes at l'Ecole Estionne and la Ecole de beaux arts. In the series of ten prints, his recent prison experiences were highlighted. This seems to be the cover for the portfolio and the text advertises what is inside, woodcuts by Ortega.

Physical Description:

This woodblock print depicts a white bird between a black area on the left and top right and orange bottom right. There is something like a cross in the upper right corner and an eye. The name Jose Ortega appears in the top left and "Grabados en madera" (woodcuts) in the lower right.
