Description

Subject Matter:

In this image a stone arch in the Norman style at Furness Abbey fills the frame of the photograph. Strong contrasts between dark and light draw attention to the material surface of the structure, while a conspicuous void at the center of the picture offers access to an interior courtyard dotted with stone columns in a state of partial ruin. This image comprises one of many photographs of historical ruins in England that Frith photographed in the early years of his career.
