Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph shows the lower torso and legs of a nude reclining on stomach with left leg crossed over right, exposing the sole of left foot. The right side of the figure's body and foot sole are brightly lit, in stark contrast to the jet black shadowy contours of her left side. The figure lies atop a carpet whose patterning is visible on the top left corner of the image, but otherwise largely obfuscated by the play of light and shadow. Minor White made the foot a point of sensual interest through the radical cropping and dramatic lighting of this view of a reclining nude seen from the back.
