Subject Matter:

This print was a gift to Warren Lombard from the illustrator Frederic Steele. Frederic Steele is best known for his illustrations for the Sherlock Holmes novel. This print is certainly in a different vein. Steele employs a graphic style here: the shading of objects is decorative. The composition of the scene draws the viewer's eye toward the sea.
