Subject Matter:

It is difficult to identify the artists of most of the prints on this album sheet, since each caricature is trimmed to isolate the image and they have been pasted down (reducing the possibility of reading the text printed on the back). They were certainly published in nineteenth-century newspapers and journals, and Honoré Daumier is the author of the three caricatures in the top row as well as the left-hand image on the second row. All of the caricatures reproduce recognizable social types in the nineteenth century, such as the provincial, the down-and-out musician, etc. The careful mounting of these prints on a single sheet of paper, complete with hand drawn frames, suggests they were compiled by an avid collector and may have been intended for display.

Physical Description:

Nine caricatures from the daily press mounted on the same sheet of paper.
