Description

Subject Matter:

Created from a short distance, this photograph depicts a wide view of the Ducal Palace in Venice. The camera was positioned facing the corner of the structure, allowing one to see two sides of the building. Spanning the bottom length of the impressive structure are two colonnaded levels, one on top of the other. Above these arcades are a series of evenly-spaced, enormous arched windows. Centered on either side of the palace are two terraces framed with columns and statues. The upper level of the palace is adorned with a geometric pattern of alternating light and dark diagonal squares. Lining the roof of the palace are a series of pointed, triangular parapets. The wide piazza below is empty save for two men standing in conversation in the center of the image, their forms dwarfed by the towering column to their right. At the top of this column, perched on a corinthian capital, is a statue of a lion—the symbol of Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice.

Physical Description:

This photograph depicts a view of a palatial structure with long colonnaded arcades at its base.  In the piazza in the foreground two men stand in conversation next to a tall column with a statue of a lion on top.
