Description

Subject Matter:

In this Parisian interior, empty of occupants, the decorative wallpaper, furnace, and ornate mirror are made more personal through the inclusion of a pair of shoes placed carefully in front of a plush armchair. The French title of this print indicates that the home belongs to a worker living on the Rue de Romainville in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, providing a sense of the social status of the owner and his or her belongings. Atget closely cropped this image of a well-used and cluttered space, which suggests the cheerful claustrophobia of urban living.
