Subject Matter:
Traditional Korean pillows vary in their form, use, and materials-- the distinct features of a pillow often allude to its specific use. Begaetmo --a pillow's side panels-- are often regarded as the pillow's most distinct feature since they are often adorned with embroidery, pearls, ceramics, or lacquer. Embroidered designs were often colorful and would depict cultural motifs-- for example, peonies often represented a wish for prosperity. This pillow has a more modern structure, and its square panels hint that it was used by women because men's pillows often had round panels.

Wood rectangular pillow with white cotton slip. The ends have a blue and red base with gold embroidered flowers.
