Description

Subject Matter:

A stone bridge cuts through a pastoral landscape in the countryside near Jerusalem. An uneven stone stair descends down to meet the meager brook below. Four to five male figures gather and converse near the entrance of the bridge opposite the viewer. A circular tower with a conical roof presides over the image in the upper right-hand corner of the photograph and signals the Tomb of Absalom. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils's career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.

Physical Description:

A small stone bridge pierces a countryside landscape otherwise filled with tree-dotted hills. A cylindrical tower dominates the upper-right corner of the photograph.
