Description

Physical Description:

A glazed porcelain jar, whose body is wide and round with a lipped, wide opening. Detailed with a Korean character, possibly a label for the jar's contents, in blue.

This type of jar was produced in large quantities since the late 19th century, so that many examples survive today. A foliage design decorates the shoulder in copper-red, which has turned green during firing. This type of copper oxide pigment was also used by potters in Kyushu region of Japan. This light gray jar was made from clay used for making traditional Joseon white porcelain. The form of the foot and rim are similar to those of early 20th century Japanese industrial ceramics.
