Description

Physical Description:

In niche above front entrance of Martha Cook Residence. Portia holds one hand towards the sky whole the other clutches an object (possibly a legal scroll or paper work) - she wears a gown and fabric head covering. She is nested in surrounding architectural elements. 

Portia was Shakespeare's greatest lawyer (from Merchant of Venice), at the time of carving it was the only known representation of this subject in marble (and could be the only one).
