Subject Matter:
This drypoint representation of the painter Berthe Morisot is one of several portraits in this medium that Marcellin Desboutin produced of his Impressionist friends. Dressed head to toe in black, Morisot is depicted sitting on an armchair, twisting to face the viewer as she leans forward on her knees. In her gloved hands she holds a Japanese-style fan, and on her head is perched a hat of indeterminate shape. This is the second state of two that Desboutin made of this subject; the first was largely rendered in outline with only the head fully finished.
