Subject Matter:
Halsman is known for his photographs of celebrities, artists, and other influential figures. This is a portrait of Georgia O'Keeffe from a series Halsman took in her home in Abiquiu, New Mexico in 1967. In this image, O'Keeffe's gray hair is pulled back. She wears a dark suit jacket with white cuffs. She rests her elbows on the table and clasps her hands at chin-level. This photograph features very dramatic lighting, recalling Halsman's early images in Paris in the 1930s in which strong lighting was frequently employed. Here, the shadows cast on her face create a dramatic chiaroscuro.
Physical Description:
This portrait of a woman shows her leaning on a table with her hands clasped at chin-level, the lighting creating a dramatic chiaroscuro across her face.
