Portrait of Jan Vos, the Poet
1662
Etching and engraving
Gift of Jean Paul Slusser, 1968/2.78
Dujardin’s portraits are usually painted; this is the only one that he etched. The print depicts the poet Jan Vos (1612–1667) and served as a frontispiece to a volume of his works. In this portrait, which is similar to a drawing of the poet by the artist Jan Lievens (1607–1674), Vos is dressed in a voluminous costume and looks out at the viewer with a stern expression. The paper scroll he holds and displays in his left hand calls attention to his art.

Physical Description:
In this bust-length portrait a man appears in dark robes and a starched white collar. He looks directly at the viewer and holds a rolled up piece of paper. Below the image is a Dutch inscription identifying the sitter as Jan Vos.
