Subject Matter:
A cluster of white buildings near the horizon line in the distance signals the town of Ramleh. A central tower stands alone amid the flat and domed roofs of the town. The viewer looks down, presumably from the Tower of Forty Martyrs, as indicated by the inscription on the image, on a cemetery crisscrossed by dirt roads. This necropolis, composed of neatly arranged graves carved from a light-colored stone, mirrors the living city in the background. This image is one of hundreds of photographs made throughout Bonfils' career which purport to document various landscapes, cityscapes, and people of the eastern Mediterranean.
