Edwin H. Blashfield, whose work decorated courthouses, banks, churches, and other buildings all over the country, was one of America's leading mural painters. His characteristic mural style, which generally makes use of large symbolical, allegorical female figures, is adapted for use in this war poster. Indeed, the style of this poster is so close to his murals that it is, in effect, a miniature mural painting. The woman holding the scroll represents the Red Cross and the one writing on the scroll is Columbia, a symbol of the nation. Together these women frame and call attention to the poster's message: "Where Columbia Sets Her Name Let Every One of You Follow Her." This clearly calls for all Americans to perform their patriotic duty and join the Red Cross in answer to the general call for help for the wonder, orphans, and refugees of the war.
