Description

Subject Matter:

This etching is from a portfolio of seven prints titled Schwarze Szenen, or Black Scenes, that Slevogt did while in Berlin. The Schwarze in the title of this portfolio seems to reference Black men since several scenes from the portfolio show Black men. Here they are in conflict on horseback, in another there is a duel, another, less violent, seems to be an acrobatic troupe. The prints in Schwarze Szenen were drawn in the beginning of Slevogt's printmaking career and helped solidify his reputation as a great illustrator and printmaker. Bruno Cassirer, who printed several of Slevogt's portfolios along with his brother Paul Cassirer, was the printer.

Physical Description:

In this scene of conflict, two men, each on horseback, are involved in horse-to-horse and hand-to-hand combat. The man facing the viewer wears a wide-brimmed hat, as do the six riders in the background. The man facing away from us appears to be a Black man.
