[Reproduction] A Woman and a Child
Suzuki Harunobu
Description
Subject Matter:
Suzuki Harunobu was the first to produce full-color prints in 1765. His work is characterized by his extensive use of color as can be seen in the print here. His work oftentimes has a comedic subtext but is difficult to find in this image. Perhaps the child falling asleep on the ground while completing some sort of work with the cylindrical object he is sleeping on while the woman finds him, is meant to reveal a comedic message.
Physical Description:
This woodblock print depicts a woman and a child in a room. The woman stands to the left and watches the child sleep on the floor with his head resting on a cylindrical object. Outside the room and beyond the sliding doors to the right are a water mill and trees. There is a vertical inscription on the lower left composed of three characters.
