Subject Matter:
Ichikawa Monnosuke I was a famous kabuki actor. He was the first of the Ichikawa Monnosukes that have been continuing for eight generations. The performing monkey was very popular in Japan and was a great source of entertainment. The artist, Torii Kiyonobu was renowned for his work on kabuki signboards and other kabuki-related works.
Physical Description:
This print depicts a young man, Ichikawa Monnosuke I, with a monkey. The man wears floral colorful clothing and holds a baton on the right over his left shoulder. On the right shoulder sits the performing monkey. The man looks to the left over his right shoulder at the monkey. He wears a head covering and in his right hand, to the left, he holds a plain stick. There is an inscription on the lower right ending with a stamp. On the lower left are two seals.
