[Reproduction]: Six Famous Poets: Figures Grouped about a Charcoal Brazier
Suzuki Harunobu
Description
Subject Matter:
This print is a perfect example of Suzuki Harunobu's famous use of color. The vibrant green floor and contrasting walls and sliding doors offer an air of liveliness and brightness. The figures, reflecting the lively atmosphere, may represent a family. The daughter on the far right covers the eyes of her father playfully while her mother watches. They stay warm by the charcoal brazier and enjoy the company leisurely as revealed by their relaxed postures.
The cloud-like design above houses poetry from the Six Famous Poets. This featuring of poetry is common in Suzuki's work and oftentimes the image is a visual parody of the poem.
Physical Description:
This image depicts three figures grouped around a charcoal brazier in a room. Two women and a man lounge around in the center of the image. The women sit upright while the man in the foreground lies on his side appearing to lay in the lap of the younger girl. The girl covers his eyes while holding something in her mouth. The older woman sitting to the left reaches her hand out to her. The walls and sliding doors are decorated with images of plants. Beyond the main room is another room in the background.
Above them is an inscription of a poem in a cloud-like outline. There is a vertical inscription on the right edge next to the man's head that appears to be the artist's name.
