Description

Subject Matter:

Lombard summered in Monhegan, Maine and developed much of his aesthetic and subject matter there. Monhegan was a well known artist colony that had existed since the mid-nineteenth century. This work, made during Lombard's time on the island, has a certain dynamism because of the inclusion of the gulls. Lombard represents several different stages of flight, which helps define the motion of the piece.
