Description

Alsatian-born Arp was one of the founding members of the Dada group. Known primarily as a sculptor, Arp also made numerous woodcuts which bear a close affinity to his low-relief sculptural works. The delicate interplay of shapes, values, and colors in this print are typical of his graphic works; here the juxtapositons create a vibrant composition. The black and red do not merely sit upon a gray background; the gray vies with the other two colors and becomes a discrete shape of its own. The following year this same image was produced as a tapestry by the Atelier Tabard at Aubusson, entitled Composition in Grey, Black and Red.
