Description

Subject Matter:

In this photograph, a man stoops in a pit surrounded by layers of exposed rock. His metallic headgear gleams, illuminated by a bright light that also makes visible the craggy texture of rocks that have been excavated around him. A dark mound of earth rises in the foreground, seemingly pressing up against the surface of the photograph; on ground in the foreground are handwritten letters and numbers.
