Description

Even after paper was commonly used in India, many manuscripts were still produced in a horizontal format, imitating the shape of earlier palm-leaf pages. This page may be from an astronomical manual; the elements in red separate the verses of the text and number them from forty through forty-four.
The vertical format for books was based on Islamic models and first seen in manuscripts produced for Islamic rulers in north India.
Exhibited in "Divine Encounters, Earthly Pleasures: Twenty Centuries of Indian Art," 12/12/03-2/22/04.
