Description

Subject Matter:

Probably taken by the French photographer Adolphe Godard, better known for his stereo views of Italy, this albumen print depicts a cluster of buildings on a hillside in the Grésivaudan valley near Grenoble, France. The photograph appears to have been taken from a position slightly above the valley, perhaps on a small hill behind the trees in the foreground of the image, which positions the houses against a backdrop of trees, a village, and mountains in successive layers that convey the variety of the natural and man-made landscapes in this region of the French Alps.

Physical Description:

Photograph of a house and trees on a hill-side with mountains and a village in the background.
