Description

Subject Matter:

Sawamura Sōjūrō III was born in 1753 and was active in kabuki from 1760 until his death in 1801. He is famous for both historical plays (jidaimono) and plays concerned with the everyday lives of commoners (sewamono). The play depicted in this print has not been identified.

Physical Description:

A man stands in front of a window, scowling. He holds a paddle in both hands. Cherry blossoms decorate his inner robe, shown under the half-removed outer robe decorated by robed figures. His head is covered by a cloth.
