Description

Subject Matter:

Fernand Léger was interested in the machines and dynamism of everyday life. His work was characterized by bold forms and simple lines and many of his figures look mechanical. In the 1920s and 30s he became ever more interested in the human form and began to move towards more naturalistic figures as opposed to heavily abstracted ones. Here we see the cylindrical forms and soft lines seen in many of his depictions of the human figure.

Physical Description:

This is a drawing of a solid, substantial, seated woman looking to the left with her arms folded across her body, her right hand holding her left forearm. The woman is wearing a hat, and a dress with buttons down the front.
